A well-made abaya can last for years if you treat it with care. Washing, drying and storing it correctly keeps the colour rich, the fabric soft and the embellishments in place. Follow this simple abaya care guide to keep your favourite pieces looking new.

1. Always Check the Label

Every fabric behaves differently. Before washing, read the care label for temperature and washing instructions. When there is no label, treat the abaya as delicate.

2. Washing

  • Wash in cold or lukewarm water to protect colour and prevent shrinking.
  • Turn the abaya inside out, especially if it has stones, sequins or embroidery.
  • Use a mild liquid detergent; avoid bleach and strong stain removers.
  • Use a gentle machine cycle inside a mesh laundry bag, or hand wash.
  • Wash dark and light colours separately, especially for the first few washes.

3. Embellished and Special Fabrics

Abayas with stones, beads, sequins or delicate tulle should be hand washed or dry cleaned. Never wring or twist them. Gently press out water with a towel instead. Satin and silky fabrics also benefit from professional cleaning.

4. Drying

  • Avoid the tumble dryer; heat weakens fibres and causes shrinking.
  • Dry in the shade, as direct UAE sun can fade colours quickly.
  • Hang on a wide, padded hanger, or lay flat for heavy embellished pieces.

5. Ironing and Steaming

  • Crepe: low heat, inside out, or use a steamer.
  • Linen: medium to high heat while slightly damp, or steam.
  • Satin and chiffon: lowest setting with a pressing cloth.
  • Never iron directly over stones, sequins or printed areas.

A handheld steamer is the best investment for abaya lovers. It removes creases quickly and is gentle on every fabric.

6. Storage

  • Store abayas on hangers to prevent creases.
  • Use breathable cotton garment bags for special pieces rather than plastic.
  • Leave space in the wardrobe so fabrics are not crushed.
  • Keep away from perfume sprays, which can stain delicate fabrics; apply perfume before dressing.

7. Quick Stain Tips

Act fast. Blot, don’t rub, and use cold water. For makeup or oil marks, a little mild dish soap on the inside of the fabric usually helps. Test any product on a hidden area first.
